Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in an area in Miami called West Little River, where about 82% of the family households are living below poverty. Many of my students are living in single-parent family homes, homes where other family members are raising them, or homeless shelters. Therefore, my students are struggling financially and cannot even afford to buy the basics such as school supplies.

My students also receive special education services and accommodations for their learning.

Therefore, my students in class all learn differently. I teach 110 students in US History, Creative Writing and Civics to 6th and 7th graders at a Title I school, where about 90% of the students are receiving free or reduced lunch.

Our school is located across the street from two homeless shelters for families. It is an upstart program that helps students and their families get help to find permanent housing. Because of their environment, these students experience a multitude of problems which interferes with their achievement and success. I grew up in the inner city of Miami and know what poverty is, but despite my struggles, I was able to be successful. Despite the odds, my students are eager to learn every day!!!!

My Project

This project will allow my students to be able to have individualize instruction with more access to technology. Many of my students have IEPs with special needs and learn differently. These devices will allow for differentiation of material based on students' various needs. My students will use these devices during teaching and individualize instruction during small groups, Google Classroom, interactive websites like Near pod, Quizziz, research, creating presentations, and so much more!. My students with special accommodations will learn at their own pace of instruction providing audio and visual needs.

My students need to be exposed digitally in a world of civics and law to increase their learning of the content and low retention rates.

More technology will increase the knowledge of students differentiated. In our classroom, we only have three working devices, we need these two additional computers and iPad so that more students can have access to technology at one time. Due to the lack of technology my students are limited on learning. I am honored to be my students advocate, molding and shaping them to rise above retention. My goal for my students is to prepare them and become responsible citizens in our community and country. Therefore I am asking for your help!!
