My Students

Do you remember the joy you would get when listening to someone read a story to you? My kindergarten students truly enjoy listening to stories on CD yet we do not have complete access to the equipment for them to do this.

I am a kindergarten teacher in Portland, Oregon with a class of 28 students.

They are beginning readers and love all aspects of reading! They get so excited when they recognize words they can sound out and read in books...which is becoming more and more everyday! I am so lucky to teach this grade level and watch the huge growths in reading that my students make throughout the year. The excitement and encouragement among students in our classroom is amazing!

My Project

One of the activities during our literacy block is "Listen to Reading". Currently, my students use a very old CD player to listen to stories. They don't have headphones so the volume is kept real low so as not to disturb other students. I would love for our class to have a set of individual CD players with headphones. Since this is an activity that only a small group of students do at one time, we do not need enough CD players for every child. These players will be used so that students can listen to various picture books during our literacy block while I am working with other students. If my students are able to listen to stories individually, they can focus on following along and tracking print in the book as they listen. This is an important skill for the foundation of reading and is so important in kindergarten!
