My Students

My students are six energetic, fun loving, third, fourth, and fifth graders. They all have a diagnosis of autism and are working on becoming independent members of their community.

"If they can't learn the way we teach, teach the way they learn".

In our classroom, we work on academics as well as activities of daily living. We celebrate achievements no matter how big or small they may be. A little love and someone who believes in them is all they need.

My Project

Every day my students participate in workstation and intensive teaching stations in the classroom to promote independence and self-advocacy. Due to being diagnosed with autism, my students experience significant delays in the areas of cognition, communication and socialization. Unfortunately, this leads to requiring support in many aspects of their life. Our workstation and intensive teaching programs aim provide students with the confidence and independence they are lacking.

The goal of using the task boxes will be for students to complete activities independently and understand how to work consecutively on tasks.

They complete these skills in succession in a check list form. The work bins from shoebox tasks will be placed in students' workstations and include skills such as stacking, matching and fine motor that they will need in the future. Learning how to be independent and using a check-list with these tasks will help my students gain employment in the future and be independent in daily living skills.
