My Project

The last few years have shown a considerable decrease in reading, reading comprehension, and reading for fun in my classes. To combat this, I've created an Independent Reading Project that will allow students to pick their OWN books to read throughout the year, culminating in a presentational project in the Spring. To incentivize the reading and project being done correctly, I want to give students a chance to read in class, but we all know that student chairs and desks are not comfortable places to curl up and enjoy a book. This project is intended to supply my classroom with some beanbags and other comfy floor furniture that students can relax on while they read in class.

There has been some enthusiasm in letting them select their own books and topics, and I would like to channel and focus that enthusiasm as best as I can.

Having some cushy pillows and bags strewn about the room would remind me of when my school had DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Days: we could bring in blankets and pillows and lie around the classroom, as long as we were reading. I want to create that environment, but I don't want students to worry about bringing materials to me or carrying them around the school (if they don't want to). Having some stationary options in my own room would be super helpful!
