My Project

Every student deserves the opportunity to find books that speak to them. However, in a time when independent reading is gaining renewed emphasis in schools, many school libraries are facing budget cuts. As a result, teachers often bear the responsibility of stocking their classroom libraries from their own resources. Without a diverse and engaging selection of books, students may begin to view independent reading as a chore, struggle to engage with it, and miss the chance to develop a genuine love for reading.

My goal is to create a classroom library that reflects the diverse interests and backgrounds of all my students, particularly those from underrepresented populations.

Since returning to teaching reading two years ago, I have been committed to building a robust classroom library. I am continually expanding it to ensure I have books that cater to my English Language Learner students, struggling readers, and students from various cultural backgrounds.

My selection includes novels and graphic novels in Spanish, as we frequently welcome students who speak little or no English. As an ESL-certified teacher, I often work with students who need accessible reading materials in Spanish and visual supports like graphic novels to aid their English language acquisition. Additionally, I am prioritizing books by underrepresented authors and featuring diverse characters, so that all students can see themselves reflected in the stories they read.

These additions to our classroom library will have a significant impact, providing my students with more opportunities to discover books they love and to foster a lifelong passion for reading.
