This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a fantastic group of high school seniors who are inquisitive, persistent, and creative. Hailing from over 45 different countries, the students in our small, Brooklyn-based, public high school are all recently arrived refugees and immigrants who have come to the U.S. for the promise of opportunity and the ability to forge a new path for themselves and their families.

All of my students are learning English as a new language and they truly are the best future this country could hope for.

One challenge I have is finding texts that are both accessible to my students as English Language Learners as well as texts that pique their interests.

My Project

At my school, students are given forty-seven minutes of Independent Reading (IR) time twice a week in order to foster a love of reading and provide student choice in a regimented day. Students are encouraged to read whatever they want in whatever language they want. Some choose books in their own languages, some drift towards mystery/horror (Stephen King is popular this year!), and many choose fantasy and realistic fiction.

Help me nurture my students' joy of reading by improving the quality and options in my IR library.

Many of the books listed here were personally chosen by my students. They seek adventure, romance, self-help, mystery, and magic from the comfort of their own classroom. Please consider helping me provide that for them.
