My struggling readers are being held back by easy access to resources and adaptive texts. Help us empower them to use technology to achieve!
My high school aged, students struggle against reading disabilities, but are eager, excited, and anxious to read.
They get frustrated by tiny fonts, heavy, slow dictionaries, and mountains of dusty, ancient texts. These students with disabilities are transitioning from a self contained classroom in a community school, to a large, unrestrictive CTT class. They want to fit in and read books just as difficult as everyone else, but they need unobtrusive supports to do this.
My Project
Even 3 e-readers will be life changing for my students. They will be able to modify the size of text on their own, look up vocabulary words in context to increase their lexicon and comprehend the book, and choose grade level books, without the embarrassment of being seen with a baby book. They can also utilize audio supports to help with fluency and pronunciation to help build decoding skills and support English Language Learners.
In an increasingly more digitalized world, it's shocking to know that my students do not have access to computers at home.
They do not all have iPods to load with audio books, some do not even have a cell phone. Access to technology can change how they compensate for their disabilities, but they don't see it in their homes, and rarely in their schools. Every child deserves the resources to help them succeed.
