Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I co-teach a class of students with severe intellectual disabilities. This school closure has thrown a wrench in my students' routines. Our students learn best by keeping a consistent schedule, which is not possible without the structure of being in an actual classroom. Many students receive various therapies in school which are not available online such as speech, occupational therapy, or physical therapy. One student is visually impaired, and another is completely nonverbal.

We stay in constant contact with families to determine their needs, and we are able to have face to face meetings with students once per week.

We are mailing out differentiated work for students to complete with us during our online meetings. Our entire district has free breakfast and lunch, but it is only available at 25 out of 150 schools, so it is often difficult for parents to get there if they have no transportation. I have been delivering to those that need it. We have also done porch drops of supplies that are needed to continue learning.

My Project

One of my students requires full adult assistance in the bathroom. He has been working on independence using many items we had at school, including pull ups and elastic waisted pants. Without these items from school, it is difficult to work on at home.

These items will help keep a school routine going, and will help mom reinforce what we have been working on at school.

This student is one of our highest need students due to lack of speech and cognition, so helping him build independence in such an important life skill will go a long way to show that he is capable of great things!
