About My Students

Many of my students are part of a world language magnet and study a variety of languages. Many are also involved in music and clubs on campus, in addition to their rigorous academic program. The students organize nearly fifty student clubs as well! The school culture looks healthy, and the students seem happy. My classes have been discussing their ideas on ways to enhance instruction in the classroom. We've already begun setting up a band practice space for students to play during lunch and after school.

We've been using an electronic drum kit for our practice space. Electronic drums are better than no drums, but they are limited in many ways. One rock band group is practicing for a public performance next month, and the drummer needs a better kit to practice on. This set of low-volume cymbals, drum heads, and attachments will allow us to modify a real drum set but keep the volume low. We will also be able to continue using the electronic kit and expand our total practice setup area. Drums are expensive, and they take up a lot of space, but they really bring people together in ways that individual guitars or keyboards don't.

In Their Own Words

We're contributing to the Rock Band Club effort by learning about funding opportunities and grant writing, so that we can build the program and provide a better practice space for ourselves. Bands often need to organize gigs, find support, and build their audience, so this experience is useful in our development as musicians as well as student club members.

Rock Band Club is open to all interested students at the school, from beginners to advanced. We are some of the advanced students, and we're developing leadership in a variety of ways through this project. In addition to the points mentioned above, we're preparing for a public performance at a famous club, and this project is designed to help our drummer have a more authentic practice setup. It's a bit scary to think about performing in public, but it's exciting, too, so we're leading the way for the beginners!

A full drum set is very loud. Our Rock Band Club meets in a classroom, and we need to keep the volume low. This project funds a set of gear to modify a full drum set, so that we can practice without bothering the classes nearby. The low volume cymbals are specially designed to reduce volume by 80%. The other drumheads and pads are designed to replace or cover the existing drums to reduce volume.
