My Students

"Never give up; great things take time."- Anonymous. This is soemthing we focus on in our classrrom. Our students learn differently, and at their own pace. We teach them that through practice we learn and understand more. My students work very hard in thier academics and everything else we do.

Our classroom is a 5th and 6th grade multiple disabilities classroom in a high poverty school district.

We not only work on our core academics, but also on social skills, functional living skills, and so much more. The students in this class are very enthusiastic about service learning; completing a task that helps others while learning themselves. We have ongoing service learning projects throughout the year, like our recycling. By receiving these recycling bins, we will be able to provide bigger bins to classrooms that currently outgrowing their much smaller bins.

My Project

The bins that we are asking for will be distributed throughout our building to the classrooms who have outgrown their much smaller recycling bin. Throughout the year the students in my class will learn about recycling and how they impact the planet. Weekly, the students walk around and collect 5th and 6th grade recycling along with the recycling from our administration building. My students collect these recycling bins and then as part of their weekly math lesson they weigh the bin and then keep track over the school year how much our school has recycled. They share this information with the rest of the school to try to increase awareness about recycling and as a way to help continue this program. These bins will be available and used in the same way for future school years.

"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it" Robert Swan.

The students in my multiple disabilities class have decided that recycling is something that they want to work on throughout the school year and are excited to be able to expand the program. This will impact the entire school. They have made this decision to do this and are doing an amazing job and now they need your help!!
