My Students

My students are joyful, rambunctious, high energy and full of life. They all have big dreams-to be lawyers, basketball players, college graduates, astronomers, and more.

I teach a self-contained, special education class in Baltimore, at a Title I school where one hundred percent of students receive free lunch.

They are all unique in their personalities and learning styles, and demonstrate their knowledge in different ways. In my classroom, they learn critical academic, behavioral, and life skills. I want to give them all the tools they need to be successful and accomplish their goals.

My Project

My students all require specialized small group instruction to meet their academic needs due to their disabilities. A typical, ideally sized self-contained classroom has fewer than 10 students. Our class currently has 15 students, and we have had as many as 17 this year. With that class size, one teacher, and small groups that should not exceed more than 5 students, that means that at any given time around 10 students are expected to be working independently while I am focused on the small group. It is very challenging for my students to stay focused even under the guidance of a teacher, so it is even harder for them when they are expected to be self-directed. I have to carefully pick what work to assign them during independent work time because it has to be something that they will find interesting enough to stay focused on, and they must be able to do it without adult supervision.

Engaging, instructional level materials will help my students stay on task even when working independently.

My students need these materials because they are expected to work without a teacher so often due to our large class size. The games and activities I have requested will help my students engage in academically rigorous tasks without becoming distracted. The sight word games and sentence building activities will help increase their reading fluency. The math flashcards will help build their automaticity with basic math facts. Phonics and rhyming games will help them improve their ability to decode unfamiliar words. These games are at an appropriate level for my students, and have rules and instructions that are easy to follow, which is critical for my classroom. Getting these materials will help maximize learning time in our classroom by ensuring that students completing independent work are actually working!
