Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a speech-language provider who services students that exhibit various speech-language deficits, including Executive Functioning Skills difficulties. My students need direct intervention in order to learn how to plan and organize their thoughts and materials in order to achieve their goals.

Most (not all) of my students come from low economic backgrounds.

A lot of them are trying to figure out how they will survive with high school academics. These are the students that once they have failed, it takes years for them to realize what they gave up by giving up on themselves, and even more time to get themselves to where they should have been. Our school uses AVID methodologies, which are great for general education students. However, for students who struggle with organizational skills (my students), the demands that are placed of them are great. Our teachers do not have the class time to get these students organized. This skill is implied--and where my students fall apart and start to lose hope for success.

My Project

I plan on using the student planner to increase my students organizational, time management, and planning skills. They will receive two months of direct instruction on how to use the planners to their full potential. I hope that their subject teachers will send me a list of their assignments and test dates, so that I can ensure students are correctly utilizing their planners throughout the day. I also hope to get parents involved, by asking them to report any obligations outside the school day that would interfere with homework completion, so that the students will plan around those blocks of time. The binder separators with folders will be used to organize my students' binders and allow for a space for important papers. My students are given at least one handout per class for their core subjects. Most times, these papers get shoved into their book bag instead of the desired section of their binders. This is also where the reinforcements will come into hand.

I have had multiple students in my room take out the loose papers from their backpacks unable to find the assignment that they need help with, and forget about when we have to find the notes to answer the questions.

The supplies that I have requested will allow me to teach organizational, time management, and planning skills to my students who display Executive Functioning deficits. I am hopeful that once these skills are increased, they will be able to set and achieve their goals.
