My Project
Our eighth grade students are rounding out the third quarter and the foggy haze is setting in. Becoming high schoolers is the only thing on many of their minds. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find anything to capture this “Tik Tok Generation’s” attention. As teachers, we know that these last 50 days are CRITICAL! We realize that our school’s success is dependent upon effectively utilizing every instructional minute we have left. How can we create this sense of urgency in our students? Through CHOICE literature, of course. Integrating novels through book clubs and literature circles centered around student choice will be the perfect way to increase engagement and review all of our SCCCR standards prior to state testing. Along with the many instructional benefits, allowing student choice and making time for reading in our classrooms will hopefully help instill a love of reading in our students, supporting our Profile of the SC Graduate by creating lifelong learners and critical consumers of information who transition into productive citizens. Because we serve in a high-poverty, rural school district, many of our students may not have access to choice literature or live in print-rich homes. In today’s time, most of our students consume reading and learning through a device when they are home, but we want to instill their love of learning by putting a book of choice in their hands and excitement in their hearts. We have no doubt that exposing students to high-interest novels of their choosing and introducing them to all of the ways they can use literature as mentor texts to expand their knowledge in the areas of reading and writing will increase engagement and help us to finish the year strong in the final quarter of the 2023-2024 school-year. Please help us beat the buzzer with these books!
