My Project
The grant’s proposed books will finish my attempt to build a class set (30) of titles that evoke empathy in young readers. These books will be presented in my novel studies class, an elective that strives to feature exemplary literature for young adults. In this course, we will read and analyze these works and focus on the empathy that these titles represent.
These titles represent a variety of writing styles in the presentation of realistic fiction designed to elicit compassion towards the situation of the main character or individual.
Sunshine: A Graphic Novel is a memoir of the author and illustrator’s time spent as a summer counselor at a camp for children facing cancer diagnoses. Million Dollar Race is a fictional work that reveals the unfair labor practices overseas in the production of popular sneakers. El Deafo is an autobiographical graphic novel in which Cece Bell describes the challenges of growing up as a child with a hearing impairment. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is based on the true story of a girl whose life is cut short due to the aftermath of the atomic bombing during WWII. Finally, Forget me Not is a novel in verse work in which the main character struggles with Tourette syndrome.
Each of these works represent a variety of issues described in a manner to evoke awareness and empathy in the young reader. They present the need for acceptance, inclusion, and social responsibility in a manner that entertains and involves the reader in compelling story telling. In the novel studies class, we will thoroughly analyze the works together in order to build understanding and reinforce concepts. The students in my classes are at an age in adolescence that is receptive to developing life lessons through the exposure to new concepts and informative discussions.
