My Students

I am currently a learning support teacher at a public school in Philadelphia, PA. However, next year I will be teaching an autism support class that will be opening at my school. Each student in this class will have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and will have an Individualized Education Program to help guide their instruction through differentiation, modifications, and accommodations in the classroom. The needs of my students will vary in many ways.

In order for my classroom to be successful there will be a number of materials to help engage my students, assist with their daily individualized routine and to met their academic and behavioral needs.

Setting up a new classroom can be expensive and the unique needs of these students creates an increase in materials and supplies needed. As a public school teacher, provided resources are limited and any help would be beneficial.

My Project

This upcoming school year I will have the honor to teach a kindergarten autistic support class. My students all have different needs, academically, socially and sensory. Each student has their own IEP which plans on their needs and goals. A common need among many of my students is improving their literacy skills.

Although there is a commonality in regards to my students having literacy needs, their individual needs within literacy do vary.

Some of my students needs to focus on letter recognition while others are working on their emergent reading skills. Through this project my students will be able to work on letter recognition through games and activities such as Wikki Stix Alphabet Cards. This Stix would be used to create and shape letters. I am also hoping to obtain a leveled library fit for kindergarteners. This library would contain books leveled A-D, just right for my kindergarten students!
