Increasing Daily Living Skills Through Daily Hygiene
Help me give my students an opportunity to practice daily hygiene skills in a structured school setting. These skills are critical for success post-graduation and to boost their self-esteem.

Third Avenue School and QUEST 1821 serves students grades 1 through 21 years of age. Third Avenue School serves students with social-emotional concerns who need a special day school setting. QUEST 1821 serves young adults with disabilities (ages 18-21), who are working on gaining job skills, daily living skills, etc.
My students have a strong desire to learn not only academics but also how to care for themselves so they can embrace their full potential.
Many of our students come to school saying they didn't have time to brush their hair/teeth in the morning or that they forgot and their parents were already gone to work.
My Project
I would like to incorporate a daily living hygiene component to the daily routine of every student. Through this program, my coworkers and I hope to meet student needs, improve hygiene knowledge and habits, provide a safe place for students to practice their skills, and increase their self-esteem.
Each child will have a ‘self-care’ bag that they will use to make sure they are ready to give it their all each day.
Each student will participate in scheduled daily hygiene opportunities, as well as learn how to advocate to take care of their needs. Through this daily activity, we hope to decrease embarrassment many of our students feel as well as to learn self-help/self-advocacy skills.
