My Students

Imagine being told to go look up a word in a dictionary or Thesaurus only to not find it there. This is what happens to my students everyday. We have one dictionary that has an adequate number of entries that all 15 students must take turns using.

My students are a mix of general education students and boys with autism in second and third grade.

Our school is in a low economic area of a large metropolitan city in California with 50% learning English as a second language. My boys with autism are on the high end of the spectrum but struggle with developing vocabulary and appropriate grammar. It is essential that they have the tools to build their language ability.

My Project

Having enough adequate dictionaries and other reference materials for my students to use would help their writing develop. It would also help them be more independent. I am also requesting a few I-Pod touches so that they can also learn to use online sources and dictionaries, which is the modern method for researching words and topics. They will be up-to-date with peers in other communities in their knowledge of reference books and technology. I also added in some of the Goosebumps reading series, which is a favorite among the students at my school. Many of my students do not enjoy reading for pleasure and I am hoping to inspire them to read by having copies of this well-loved series. The more reading they do, the more exposure to English language they will have and their own language development will flourish.

Donating to my project will make the difference in the lives of children in an underprivileged neighborhood at an underfunded public school.

The state may be bankrupt, but I still want to provide the best and most advanced reference materials for my students. Kids with disabilities and in poor communities deserve the same level of education as in wealthy ones. Please donate today!
