Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are learning Computer Graphic Design. Their searches for supporting artwork of their design ideas are currently limited to what they can slip past the network filters designed to protect them. Bringing work from home is discouraged because of the threat of viruses.

My students are mostly sophomores with a few upper classmen.

Our district, consisting of two large high schools, has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and an even higher number of minority students, mostly Latinos. They are less technologically sophisticated than students from more affluent areas which makes my job of teaching computer graphic design more challenging. Harnessing their curiosity and creativity is easy and can become a powerful tool in maximizing educational opportunities. The challenge is putting together an array of technology for them to sample as they explore my curriculum.

My Project

I am a career and technology teacher. I provide my students with an opportunity to learn technological skills that are valued in the workforce. Students develop these skills while working on projects that are exciting to them. This excitement creates an avenue of communication where I can underscore the value of all of their studies while encouraging them to consider opportunities that are available to them after graduation. Currently students are learning to use Photoshop and are designing a magazine cover. Future projects will be movie posters and cd designs. All of these projects have the potential to become more personal and therefore more relevant to the students with the incorporation of digital photographs that would be taken with the cameras I am requesting.

The classes I teach can often become an opportunity for a child to discover something exciting during a day that could include a lot of stress and frustration.

Not every child gets to experience success in all of their classes. I try to harness student excitement in my class to inspire my students to apply themselves more in all of their classes to help them better prepare themselves for their futures.
