My Students

Along with the unique gifts our students have to offer they come to our program with a variety of special needs including Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, language and cognitive delays, motor disabilities and other health impairments.

We are a Title I school, which means most of our students come from a low socio-economic background and these families qualify for free lunches.

We mainstream with our typical peers and create an inclusive preschool environment.

My Project

We want to end this academic year in the most exciting way possible for our youngest students at Strathern St Elementary (a Title 1 school in Los Angeles) after a year that has been challenging for all. This diverse group of 4 preschool classes—2 mainstream and 2 special needs—which normally thrives on in-person classroom interaction, has had to manage with remote learning, a lack of educational field trips, and the prospect of a graduation event with their families which will likely be virtual.

Our preschool staff feels strongly that we need to do something special for this class.

In order to mark the end of the year, we brainstormed to invite popular local author DJ Steinberg for a virtual visit, to celebrate the children’s accomplishments in preschool and get them excited about their transition to Kindergarten. DJ is a dynamic and creative presenter, the author of 22 books for young people, who has worked at Disney and Nickelodeon and is good at captivating children this age.

We want to bring together the mainstream and special needs students (about 60 in all) for 2 back-to-back virtual sessions during our final week of school. As part of his talk, DJ will read some humorous poems from his bestselling book, “Kindergarten, Here I Come!” and surprise the students, many who come from homes that cannot afford books, that he will autograph a personal copy for each of them as a gift from the school.

Please help us reach our goal to cover the costs of this author appearance and autographed books. (The author has agreed to pass along his author discount of 40% off, to benefit the school.) With your help, we will end the year on a high note for our preschoolers and their families.
