Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This school year, I have been fortunate enough to provide services to 23 children in first through fourth grade. My students attend elementary school in Simi Valley California. Our school is a Title I school. We receive special funding to meet the educational needs of children that receive Title I services that are equitable to those provided to eligible public school children.

I love my students because they work hard and make great strides in improving their reading and writing.

My Project

How do I explain to my students that the woman with short hair, that sometimes volunteers in our classroom, is not just Ms. Riley's best friend, rather that she is the woman Ms. Riley lives with, loves, and will some day marry?

My students come from a multitude of diverse families and so does their teacher.

This project began as an attempt to bring LGBTQ representation into the classroom in a fun and engaging way. A literacy station that features LGBTQ children's books was my gateway to allowing me to be my true and authentic self. With authenticity and respect at the core of this project, I decided to create an increasingly diverse library for my students. I want my students to be exposed to children's books that have fictional characters and real world historical figures that represent our diverse population.

This project is meaningful to me, and it is an important step in creating an inclusive learning environment.
