Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

The pandemic has hit them hard: their natural exuberance has taken a hit because they are isolated from their friends and teachers.

Many of them are developing anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal can't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they are currently experiencing. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well. Although I can't solve these problems, I can do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

During my years of teaching, I know one thing to be a universal truth: student motivation isn't always what you want it to be, but EVERYONE works harder and behaves better when they can earn a REWARD. I'm moving schools next year and don't know my new students yet, but I am positive that a points system combined with tickets that they can use to buy snacks and toys will keep my students on the right track.

Getting back to in-person learning after more than a year of being at home is surely going to be difficult for these tweens and teens, so I'd like to be able to reward their efforts and motivate them to work their hardest.
