Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The number of students who are chronically absent, defined as a student missing at least 10 percent of the days in a school year, has nearly doubled since pre-COVID 19. Chronic absenteeism affects students from all demographics, but low-income students and students of color are more likely to fall into this category. Being chronically absent from school makes it hard for a student to keep up with the pace at which they are expected to learn and grow, causing that student to fall behind. It is a predictor of low academic success, and it also predicts which students may eventually drop out of school. Students who are chronically absent also miss out on opportunities to build friendships at school, become active in their school community and pursue future career interests.

When we invest in the development of children, especially those who may require extra support, we ensure that the talents and contributions of our young people are available to our communities in the future.

At PS 146, we provide a blend of school-wide and targeted interventions that improve attendance and reduce absenteeism. These include whole-school activities such as morning greeting and recognition ceremonies; phone calls home to understand root causes of absenteeism; and a Check-In/Check-Out coaching model to set expectations and discuss challenges around individualized student attendance goals. In addition to these methods, something that really helps us out is having prizes to serve as incentives for students working towards their goals. Something as small as a bag of chips or a sticker is enough to motivate a child. Helping us provide prizes and snacks as attendance incentives will help us get more students to the building every morning and reverse some of the chronic absenteeism trends that we have seen lately.
