This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A challenge I encounter as a teacher and coach is helping students achieve their potential and improve their self-esteem. This exists particularly in my female students. I've found sports to be quite helpful and thus jumped at the opportunity to start our inaugural Girls Flag Football team!

We're a large high school in Miami-Dade County (one of the largest counties in the nation) with a multi-cultural 97% minority population.

The girls who have so far come out for the inaugural practice sessions range from grades 9 to 11, multi-sport athletes to novices, advanced academics to low-performing students, with a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

My Project

My students need sets of flags and vests to run practices and scrimmages as start-up materials for our inaugural Girls Flag Football team. Most of the girls have never played organized football before but are joining us on this new endeavor and thus learning and growing together. Sports are capable of teaching strategy and tactics and helping students learn to work and overcome adversity together, to push themselves to achieve goals and to move past preconceived limits. Sports can also improve fitness, health, and overall body image. These traits transform into confidence and self-esteem with exponential results in other fields and areas.

Your donations to get this team off the ground will help immensely and foster an aura of independence and self-esteem as these girls take on roles normally reserved for their male counterparts in our society (especially a sport such as football).

The fact that we will be our school's inaugural team has instilled in them a sense of pride and belonging to the overall culture of the school and the community. These basic items that are necessary in order to field a team will go a very long way.
