Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I have the honor to teach at a science-focused high school where my students have the opportunity to attend STEM internships, take AP science classes, and really envision careers in the medical field. However, though science is a love for my students they miss the arts.
Three years ago a group of 3 freshmen approached me and a co-worker to ask us to co-lead a new Drama Club at our school to help quench their thirst for the theater and the arts.
Now, 3 years later, they are seniors, and we have a mixed grade group of amazing students who love the stage and have been a part of producing 2 musicals and have seen over 10 shows.
My students self-identify as game changers and are working hard to reach their goals. Many will be the first in their families to earn a high school diploma, and they enter high school determined to graduate. Additionally, over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. They are scholars, empathetic humans, life-long learners, and fearless when it comes to their education and their goals. They are creatives, fun, curious, and kind.
My Project
I know this project will make a difference for my students because this musical is about three days in the life of the Latino community in Brooklyn which in many ways will carry themes and experiences that my students can relate to as members of a strong Latino community in Oakland. Many of the topics and themes in the play my students deal with in their own lives such as financial struggles, family strife, cultural tension, and community violence. Beyond the topics my students will be able to see the style of Lin Manuel-Miranda, a Latino playwright, and all that goes into a musical from the lyrics, singing, dancing, costume design, and set.
