My Students

Save us from historical ignorance! Introduce us to the real life heroes of the past we can admire and love!

Our students are in their first year of a brand new magnet with the focus on global awareness.

They come from many places. This is a very diverse and multicultural group of fourth and fifth graders. They are curious, enthusiastic, and ready to learn! In the classroom, we conduct scientific experiments and investigations. We work on the computers researching new information for the projects. Students study in cooperative groups discussing various topics and coming up with new questions. The curriculum focuses on learning to think, asking questions, to formulate hypotheses, generalize and narrow down data and findings. If you ask me, their teacher, about their strengths, I would tell you that they excel at thinking and piecing the ideas together. Nothing gives me more pleasure than discussing new theories or current events in my class. I do not always know the answers to their questions and they often research them on their own giving me the answers the next day. This is a great class!

My Project

I am requesting a set of books that will immerse my students in Social Studies. As I am discussing the current issues in the world or the events of the past, I realize that as much as my students want to learn, the lack of background knowledge does not permit them to fully uncover and understand American History. The set of books that I chose will allow the kids to time travel into the era of George Washington. They will trace the origins of our country to the people who had nothing but sheer will to live in prosperity and fairness. Along with reading the book, we will conduct the investigation into the lives of the Thirteen American Colonies. We will look into the character of George Washington and other founding fathers. Students will understand the challenges and hardships of Washington's Army, and they will familiarize themselves with the course of American Revolution.

I want my students to understand the sacrifices that were made for the democracy we enjoy in our country.

I want them to begin to choose strong and courageous characters of the past as their heroes! After the study of the era of George Washington, I hope that they will leave my class with an understanding that democracy and freedom are something we must fight for every day. I also hope that this unit will be the beginning of their adventures in American history in the future!
