Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm writing to you in the hope of elevating my morning tutorial program to match the specialness of my wonderful third grade students. I teach a mid-sized class of eight-to-ten year-olds at a lovely school in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I say lovely because the administration is superb, and the teaching staff has heart and enthusiasm to spare. In recent years, teachers became mandated to teach an early-morning tutorial period for small groups of students identified as needing extra help. Earlier this year, the DonorsChoose community helped me a great deal by providing my tutorial group with a set of phonics workbooks to aid instruction. (Prior to receiving that gift, I had to create and implement all materials myself--an exercise in the mismanagement of time if there ever was one.) Well, lo and behold, it may be only January, but the kids have made such progress that their books are rapidly nearing completion. At this time, I am in need of more advanced phonics books, as well as hands-on math materials to keep newly acquired skills fresh and current. Also, as their phonics skills have increased, I would also like to start allowing listening center time for a subset of children. For that reason, I have requested a set of "Arthur" books--a great series for kids who are approaching chapter book readiness. Once again, thank you for your time and generosity.
