Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 26 of the most amazing fourth grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

Many of our students are below grade level by more than one grade level in both reading and math.

Having remote learning due to Covid-19 didn't help matters any either. In many instances, they have to take care of siblings while their parents work multiple jobs, or in some cases are at home alone while parents are at work. I try not to make excuses, but literally, life often gets in their way.

My Project

One of the biggest obstacles we will face with the upcoming school year is student (and staff) safety. We will have to be very smart about what materials we offer our students for learning. Students will not be able to share books or supplies. Students will have to be able to use materials in person and remotely. That is why when thinking about guided reading, I knew that I could turn to Scholastic Storyworks!

Scholastic Storyworks has amazing narrative works that students simply love.

They are written to be high interest and at the same time accessible for multiple levels. They come in little paper magazine format so each student will get their own copy and not have to share.

The truly best part is if we have to go remote due to an outbreak, students wont miss a beat because they are also digital and can be accessed via Google Classroom. They are just a great option when planning for either in person or remote learning. I know I can use it, and I know because it is scholastic it will be top notch!
