Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a school counselor I have the privilege to work with students K-8. These students come from diverse backgrounds and look forward to meeting with me. The counseling room is a very inclusive place. Everyone is welcome. This is why it’s important for me to create an environment that is welcoming and where my students will feel valued and safe. I want them to know that at this school they are loved and cared for.

As a school counselor I see students in my room daily.

Providing a safe space for students to come when they need to talk, regulate their emotions, and work on social-emotional skills is important. Having different card/board games allows them to decompress while talking and interacting with each other in group.

Providing these items for the counseling office will help students form new relationships and friendships with each other as they learn to regulate their emotions and work on social-emotional skills.

My Project

These games will make a difference in my students’ social emotional learning. It helps them develop empathy, increase self-control and manage stress. It also helps them build better relationships and interpersonal skills that will serve them in school and beyond, helping them succeed as adults. Board games help children learn important social skills such as waiting, turn taking, sharing, how to cope with losing, making conversation, problem solving, compromising, collaborating and being flexible. I can help them discover ways of spending their time with people other than playing video games.
