Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm with a Special Needs, self-contained, third grade. That's a mouthful and a handful. The children range from ADD, ADHD to Autistic, ED (Emotionally Disturbed) and Learning Disabled. Every day is a new beginning with these shining stars. They're amazingly curious and full of wonder. This world is a strange place and these little darlings are just beginning to find their place in it. Their curiosity and their simplistic view of life amazes me daily. They have the capacity to love freely and trust me with their tender hearts. I don't take that lightly. My Thundercats are hard-working and full of energy. Some of them are on medication to control their impulsive behavior and outbursts. All of them hold the keys to my heart. I've got to reorganize and redirect their energy. It's difficult enough in the classroom; now, with this remote learning, they're struggling more than ever.

My Project

This process is still new to us. It's difficult holding up charts and notebooks while checking to make sure that they're fitting into the laptop screen. I ordered two different types of Document Cameras so that I can teach and be available while teaching.

It's challenging enough for Special Education students without all the new expectations being placed on them.

They need all my attention and my being away from the laptop trying to write or point at something doesn't work for them. The document camera will enable me to demonstrate actual work pages in clear enlarged print. They will have me front and center to answer questions and provide problem-solving skills right before them, like we did in the classroom. These are indeed hard times and I realize this is not a cheap request. I believe in my Thundercats and I've convinced them to believe in themselves. Now I'm asking you to believe in us.
