Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you had a teacher who made you love reading? That created that special environment? Mr. Schweitzer did that for our students. Tragically he is gone but we refuse to let his passion for reading fade away. Our goal is to uplift our students' spirits and breathe life into our library in his honor.

Our school services students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

We have 528 students. The majority of our students are English language learners with Spanish being their dominant language. Our school is located in a high-need, low income community. Our school wide goal is to promote a love of reading. We have been working hard to establish routines to help our students succeed. Our school library is a central place that promotes reading throughout the building.

My Project

Our school has suddenly and unexpectedly lost one of our beloved teachers. He has been our school librarian for the past 12 years. Mr. Schweitzer transformed a pile of books into a library. He labeled, categorized, and inputed all of the books into the computer to create a system for borrowing books. The entire school, kindergarten through fifth grade and the staff, knew and loved Mr. Schweitzer. He truly shared his love of reading. The children have been heartbroken since hearing the news. Mr. Schweitzer had always wanted to upgrade the library through a proposal but unfortunately didn't have the chance. The bookcases, desks, and chairs all could use replacing. We thought what better way to uplift our school spirit and bring warmth and happiness back to our school library then to provide some much needed material in Mr. Schweitzer's honor! The desks, chairs, beanbags, and mats will all provide a place for the students to sit and read comfortably. The shelves will store the books.

Your donations will make a huge difference in providing our entire school a place that is warm, colorful, and inviting.

A place to read, reflect, and remember a loved one. The materials that we are asking for will help us create an atmosphere that will continue to promote a love of reading for many years. It is unfortunate that Mr. Schweitzer is not here to see his dream of upgrading the library come true but we can only hope that our students will get the chance to enjoy it with your support.
