Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students need history to jump out of books and into something that looks like the world we live and breathe in. I teach US History to 11th graders in a high needs, inner-city setting.

The obstacle we face in trying to engage with history is not a lack of textbooks. It is a lack of imagination. Our classrooms are not equipped with the tools that are needed to make history into something the students can relate to, grab hold of, and run with in ways that will help them make meaningful and lasting connections with the material.

An LCD projector would help the history that we work on in the classroom engage the senses and intellectual curiosity of the students, by allowing students to access photos, internet documentary clips, movies, life sized maps and interactive graphics, shared student work, etc. Instead of "talking" about history we could see it, hear it, and experience it in ways much more likely to make a life-long impression on the students.

Your help would ensure that my students get the opportunity to to explore history as it ought to be- as something alive and related to who and what we are as a people now, as something to be experienced and not just memorized or learned by rote. Your help would also allow our classroom experience to prepare students for college by helping them to become actively interested in a specific field and to use that interest as a springboard to taking control of and driving their own learning.
