My Students

I am the Reading Specialist for our elementary school. This means I get to spend each day teaching fourth and fifth grade readers in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma! My students are a diverse group with varied levels of learning. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunches.

These students have huge hearts and love to learn in non-traditional ways including room transformations, arts integrated lessons, and project-based learning.

My students have curiosity, creativity, compassion, and positive attitudes. They are truly amazing people. My school is wonderfully supportive of the active hands-on learning that we do in our classroom. I couldn't ask for a better learning environment for these students. We are truly a community!

My Project

“It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.”

― Maya Angelou

Our Title 1 Reading class is a place that struggling readers can come to hone their skills, learn a love of reading, and interact with language in a new and exciting way. I have found that by using authentic literature, my students are more engaged, and have more of a desire to participate.

I plan to include these sets of diverse books for them to read and enjoy as we study theme, main idea, language and vocabulary, and compare and contrast the content to their own lives.

As Stephen R. Covey stated, “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities”. I would like to use these book sets to help my students have an avenue to relate to others, and see the beauty in their differences. We will also use the children's books of poetry to help my students with rhythm, rhyme, and verse in an upcoming poetry project.
