Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students and I learn and work together in a classroom in a New York Public School. During these difficult economic times, I feel it is important to introduce students to basic concepts of finances and money by beginning to incorporate financial literacy into my classroom. Basic knowledge of counting money, making change, saving money, and saving on expenses are important life and careers skills that can be addressed during school to help build a foundation for financial literacy activities and learning outside the classroom, in later school years, and in life. In order to incorporate lessons on financial literacy into my classroom, I would like to include realistic play money into our math lessons. The play money set I am requesting includes both bills and coins to give students practice counting money and making change using bills up to twenty dollars and coins including half dollars. Allowing the students to practice handling, counting, and making change with realistic play money will help prepare them for the everyday life tasks of a consumer and give them skills needed to be in sales. In order to help reinforce these monetary skills, I would also like to incorporate financial literacy into our classroom listening center through a set of “Money Hands-On Listening Center Books”. These books which come in CD format and include realistic play money that will assist students in mastering working with money. Children at the listening center will listen and follow along to the story which helps them count money and make change. This center will allow children to share the experience together because it comes with enough materials and books for four students to work together. The “Money Hands-On Listening Center Books” will also help English Language Learners by providing both visual and audio instruction on working with money and making change. By incorporating these resources into my classroom, students will have practice counting money, adding money, subtracting money, and listening to directions. I would also like to incorporate several books about financial literacy into our classroom. Each book focuses on a different aspect of financial literacy including spending, saving, managing money, different careers, and creating a budget. These books, which include “The New Totally Awesome Money Book for Kids”, “Kids' Money Book: Earning, Saving, Spending, Investing, and Donating”, and “If You Made a Million”, give great examples of how children can begin to learn from a young age about finances by simply understanding the difference between a need and a want, turning off a light switch each time they leave a room, and keeping a journal to help budget your money. Another resource I would like to utilize to teach financial literacy is the “Neighborhood Jobs Math Problem Solving Kit”. This Math Kit allows students to solve real world math problems which focus on different jobs, for example a banker and cashier, which incorporate financial aspects. The math problems included in the “Neighborhood Jobs Math Problem Solving Kit” will not only help reinforce the financial skills taught in class, but also help students understand the importance of these skills in the real world and everyday life. Finally I would like to utilize a Visual Presenter in our classroom to assist the students in learning about money and finances. A Visual Presenter is a document camera that shares images on a screen for the whole class to view, whether it is an illustration, a page from a book, a website from the Internet, a PowerPoint Presentation, or notes and examples which can be written directly on the device. Utilizing a visual presenter, I can model how to add money, subtract money, and make change using the play money for the whole class to see on the screen. Students can view grocery fliers using the visual presenter and calculate savings without having to make copies of the flyer for each student. Students can work together to balance a checkbook or view a store receipt to learn about sales tax utilizing the visual presenter. A visual presenter would allow me to share many different resources with the children to assist them with financial literacy. Sharing supplemental resources with the class is vital to student learning, but it is often difficult to share these resources because it requires a lot of photocopying. The Visual Presenter would also allow me to differentiate learning for English Language Learners and visual learners who need illustrations and images to assist their understanding of difficult concepts. Financial Literacy is something that can begin at any age. I believe it is important to begin to build an understanding of finances and a foundation for their financial literacy. I believe the resources I am requesting will be vital tools in helping my students learn and will be invaluable resources in my classroom.
