My Students

Teaching in the extremely diverse and picturesque neighborhood in New York is a rewarding experience. My classroom is full of eager and excited learners from all over the world who teach me new things every day. These children love coming to school where they grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Our school offers some amazing music and art programs through which our students learn to express themselves in different ways. They take pride in their work and enjoy sharing it with each other and with their families. Many of our wonderful families join us in our classrooms to engage in our learning as often as possible.

The advantages to being part of such a unique and richly diverse school community also come with countless hardships that we strive to overcome together every day.

Many of our students are living in poverty and we have high populations of students with disabilities and English Language Learners. Even with a love for learning, many of our students are reading far below grade level, which often carries over to struggles in writing and math as well. I want to give my students every possible resource to help them reach their potential.

My Project

We make countless choices every single day in our classroom. Some choices are "small", such as choosing whether to use a pencil or a pen during writing workshop. Other choices are more academic and significant, such as looking at a menu to decide which word study activity to complete or choosing a meaningful topic when writing an informational text.

Providing children with choices in the classroom increases their motivation and productivity.

Carpets, cushions, and pillows already offer some seating choices in our classroom. Many students choose to sit on the floor with a clipboard when they work on their writing and others spread out on our cozy carpet with a good book during independent reading time. Some math partners like to stand up at the counter and work while others find an empty table to sit at together. My goal for this year is to provide even more seating options for my students so that they will be comfortably in control of their own learning.

The balance ball seats and wobble stools that I am requesting will help students who may need to wiggle around a bit while they work. They are wonderful, soft alternatives to the cold, hard, heavy metal chairs we currently have. These seats can easily be moved from a student table to our small group learning table or to the counter top space along the side of our classroom.

I am excited to see the level of engagement and productivity in my classroom once my students have control over staying comfortable while they work!
