Improving Reading Comprehension With Fun Activities

My students need to play games and use activities that will improve their comprehension, while still having fun. They need sentence strips to practice writing and glue sticks so they don't have to bring their own.

My Students

I am a resource teacher for students with autism in an elementary school. I have students in kindergarten, first grade and second grade. My students are fully-included with their peers, but still have many needs that require significant support to succeed. I spend time with my students in their large general education classes, assisting them with their classwork and modifying their assignments so they are able to complete them successfully. I spend other parts of my day bringing groups of students to my classroom for special education small group instruction. We practice phonics like increasing the number of sight words they can read, reading strategies to increase their comprehension of a story, and social skills that they need to practice to "blend in" with their peers and build/maintain friendships. My students are bright, funny, hard-working, and most importantly UNIQUE. It is a pleasure to work with them! I work hard so that they can keep up with being in a large classroom, despite their disability.

My Project

My students will use the items, such as the reading & comprehension games, in this project during their small group pull-out in their special education classroom. My students are reading at levels that are below grade-level and need extra help to make improvements. By using these items they will have fun while developing their reading fluency and comprehension skills. They will make progress on their IEP goals and increase their reading levels so that they can be more successful while included with their general education peers. The sight word puzzles will help them recognize more words while reading. The sentence strips and handwriting paper will help them practice writing all the new words they are learning through the games and puzzles.
