My Kindergarten students are an incredible bunch!

I have 6 boys and 19 girls in my classroom. Since self-esteem is one of the important goals of Kindergarten, I make sure that each and every student knows that I respect and have high expectations for them. I am constantly looking for ways to inspire and build a love of learning in all of my students. We have 100% free lunch and many of my students live in transitional housing and shelters.

Despite the challenges they may face, my students come to school each and every day eager to learn. Kindergarten provides students with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional and problem-solving skills needed throughout their schooling.

My Project

Interlocking foam mats will improve my classroom environment in many ways. First, I will be able to foster a love of reading by giving students the option to read a book on the mat with a friend. Second, the symptoms of students with asthma or severe allergies will be reduced because dust can easily be removed with a wet cloth. Lastly, foam mats offer more traction and cut down on slips, trips and falls.

Overall, a bright and soft place to sit can go a long way to make a young child feel more comfortable and relaxed - which means he or she will be more productive in the classroom.

I hope to improve my classroom community by creating a warm and cozy area for students to sit during lessons, when reading a book, listening to books on tape with the requested headphones, or when playing with a friend.
