My school is working to build a stronger band and music program. In previous years, very few students have been able to participate in performances but the excitement for the band program is growing and we have more than doubled the involvement in our band performances!
The students at Jefferson are very passionate about performing and creating music.
Most students at Jefferson have never had the opportunity to learn to play a band instrument before they come to our school. Several students have told me that band is the highlight of their day, and that it encourages them to come to school. The band program at Jefferson has never been stronger than this year and students are becoming more and more invested. Students love the participating in the "ensemble experience," and are learning more about high quality music-making through building listening skills. They are also practicing giving constructive feedback and praise to their peers, building their social skills and their ability to reflect. Jefferson students are engaged in very challenging work in all of their classes on a daily basis. These students work hard for the things they are passionate about and they deserve a high quality learning environment.
I am requesting rubber-backed carpets that I can lay on the floor of our band room. The school building does not have an actual music room. Our band room is located next to the gymnasium in an old locker room. There is an old bathroom and old shower room connected to the band room that we use for storage. The problem with the room is that it is not equipped with any sound absorption. The room is spacious, but is a box with flat walls and tiled floor. Even the slightest movement of a chair creates large amounts of reverberation. This brings many challenges to the space, such as that it can be difficult for me to project my voice over the echoes in the room caused my movements or talking. Even more concerning is the decibel level reached when everyone in the band plays together. Students are at risk of hearing loss as well as losing out on the opportunity to apply good listening skills which are crucial to the music instruction and learning.
This project will change my students' lives for the better by making our learning environment more conducive to creating high quality music.
Rehearsals will become more efficient with the addition of carpet to the room because the carpet will help absorb a large portion of the sound that bounces around the room. With more sound absorption the room will be a more welcoming and pleasant space to learn in.
