Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“We read to know we're not alone.” -William Nicholson. My autistic students literacy skills are extremely scattered. My biggest challenge is getting my students to an appropriate reading level with the lack of appropriate books to help support the learning process.

My classroom currently has six autistic students.

Each of these six students have their very own unique personality and learning styles. However, one thing they all have in common is their eagerness to learn. We are school that is located off today, my students have progressed tremendously in their independence skills throughout the classroom. However, the reading is a struggle because of the lack of appropriate books in the classroom. They love being read to. but they love it more when they can choose books to read independently although the books are not always appropriate for their reading level.

My Project

With the leveled books and library cart the students will be able to chooses book at their reading level. Instructional books will be used with a teacher working on the literacy skills that are needed to improve comprehension and fluency. The students will learn to not only sequence, to identify story elements, but most importantly they will be able to make predictions from text read.

Not only will this project provide books in the classroom, but students can take books home and read with their parents.

This will help foster reading in the home. Ultimately, I want my students one day to be as independent as possible and hopefully one day, they can have jobs. I know to dream is not enough, but for me it's to use every resource possible for the dream to become a reality.
