My Students

I have the most amazing students! My children are bright, but are at times unmotivated due to issues unrelated to academics. Many have both social and emotional challenges. A number of them also suffer from health issues that sometimes keep them out of school for extended periods of time. However, even with all of these outside challenges, it never stops my goals of helping them succeed in the classroom.

The issues that these children face is compounded in a manner that has a negative effect on their academic life.

They often carry the socio-economic burden of their parent or guardian. A place to call home is not always stable for my children. Our school has a high population of students living in shelters. The school is considered a Title I school with 100% free breakfast and lunch. One request that the students made while we were establishing classroom norms was that they wished for their classroom to feel like a home.

My desire is to create a safe, environment where my children feel nurtured and comfortable.

My Project

I would love to strengthen my students’ social-emotional and academic growth by adding the Power My Learning (PML) platform to our instructional menu. PowerMyLearning has the ability to improve the relationship between home and school. Many students that I service do not receive academic support at home and thus are at an academic disadvantage. PowerMyLearning will help to fill this gap though digital academic coaching at home, as well as reinforcement, when students teach parents and guardians.

It has been my experience that when families are actively involved in the students’ academic life, those students have a positive attitude towards their responsibility to learn in school.

Having access to PowerMyLearning will serve to broaden the scope of families who will be impacted. This platform will provide opportunities that allow more families to become active in their child’s learning.

PowerMyLearning will not only serve to reinforce what the students learned, but it will help to build confidence in my students. Confidence is a wonderful catalyst for motivating further learning.

I especially look forward to the use of PML for my English Language Learners. About one third of my 75 students are ELLs. The ability to provide services in multiple languages will be of great benefit to our community. This will relieve the added pressure of decoding for the students, so that they can narrow their focus on the content, since it is in their native languages. At the same time, they will be able to build their new language skills by also having access to the content in English.

Please help me grow my community by facilitating opportunities for students and families to bond, while empowering our academic lives with PowerMyLearning.
