Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with multiple handicapped students. They often are unable to do things on their own physically without support. We need to adapt tools that those who are able-bodied often take for granted or buy adapted tools, like scissors or utensils.

Our students should be as independent as possible!

The scissors work by pushing down instead of holding it with two fingers. For students who do not possess strong fine motor skills, this is much easier. The cups can be held by the students themselves. And with a secure straw, they do not need an adult to hold the straw and/or cup for them. The same with bendable forks and spoons. Some of our students can feed themselves, but do not have the coordination to turn their hands as they eat.

The immersion blender will be a great addition to our two classes, twofold. First, it will help students have their food better puréed so that eating is easier and much more enjoyable. Some students who require puréed food can aspirate when the food is not broken down enough. Second, once adapted with a switch device, the students can use it to mix up some hot or cold chocolate or anything else they may want to cook. Jello anyone!
