This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching at a performing arts high school, science is usually out of the spotlight. I want to bring science to life and bring out the curiosity in every student. My students range in ages (14-17) and levels, but all are eager to be at school everyday.

My science classroom consists of 105 students; many whom receive free/reduced price lunch and some whom are emergent bilinguals.

My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I strive to make my science classroom to be a place where they are experiencing meaningful learning experiences.

My Project

A few weeks ago, 30 students were selected to attend a microbiology program at the American Museum of Natural History with help from a sponsorship in our community. We conducted a bacteria-collecting project during one of the sessions. I wanted to bring this experiment back to my classroom for ALL my students to experience this.

This project will spark curiosity in the field of science and help my students understand the bacteria structures and their functions.

The cotton-tipped applicators will allow my students to swab various locations around the school to retrieve bacterial samples. They will then apply these swabs to the prepared agar plates to allow the bacteria to incubate. We use agar in science because it provides nutrients for bacteria growth. The disinfectant wipes and the nitrile gloves are used as a precaution to avoid contamination when handling these bacterial samples.

After swabbing the dirtiest (bacteria-growing) places in the school, we will monitor the growth and record the data. Lastly, we will look at these samples under a microscope.
