Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how great it was to be a kid and have a family member read to you? Imagine the joy you could bring to children who do not always have that luxury.

My students are in grades four and five, and without even knowing it they have succumb to the budget crisis facing so many of our public schools today.

They are a part of a "bridge" class for the simple fact that our school cannot afford another teacher. In an urban public school with very little funding it is hard to really capture the attention of your students without the types of technology that intrigue our digital natives. Our class has a large population of English language learners. It is sometimes difficult to get across various linguistic concepts such as metaphors and similes when these students lack many of the basic skills we take for granted. I would love to enrich their lives by providing them with the opportunity to open their ears; listen and explore culture through this learning modality.

My Project

With the use of a listening center, I hope to bring to life learning for not only my students who have speech and language difficulties, but those who learn best through auditory means. What I hope to have students build through the use of a listening center is fluency skills in reading, content knowledge with audio books, vocabulary, development of speech and intonation, as well as knowledge and an understanding of cultures. I foresee such a center as an invaluable tool that will benefit student learning on multiple levels. It is a tool that can help to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of all students in various ways.

Helping to fund our listening center will bring new life to our classroom.

Students will be able to connect to their interests and empower themselves through new understandings. This tool is not only helpful to the children of this classroom today, but it will be an excellent tool to help enhance the learning needs of many students to come.
