Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Student's at our school love to learn! They enjoy reading, but sometimes struggle to read on grade level. They are into sports and technology. We are a MEDIA magnet, so we focus on communicating, collaborating, and creating with students. They enjoy researching and exploring apps.

Our school has a wonderful school-wide community.

We are like a family and everyone watches out for each other. It is not uncommon to see an older student helping a kindergartener tie their shoe in the hallway.

My Project

We have noticed that many students who come into our kindergarten classes are unable to communicate their feelings and problem solve with peers. We would like to incorporate imaginative play in our daily station rotations in order to provide opportunities for students to practice these skills. These toy sets will allow students the chance to engage with each other and improve their communication skills.

In the book Purposeful Play, the authors state "Informed teachers can see the standards being met in authentic and joyful play and help design engaging instruction that helps children meet the rest." These toy sets will allow us to provide children with opportunities to meet our standards while having fun.

For example, the grocery set allows students to interact with each other while also using math by counting items and paying for items as well as literacy by writing grocery lists and reading item names.
