My Students

A typical day in my Adaptive Physical Education class is unpredictable and at times challenging. Some of my students have sensory issues and this is the year I hope to help them overcome those issues. My biggest challenge is the lack of funding and equipment.

My students are beautiful and bright children from diverse backgrounds.

They are loving, charming and full of life. All, they want and need is the tools to help them succeed. Their ages vary from 5 to 10 years old. My school is a tremendous organization that goes above and beyond to address and services the needs of all our students. The school services children with different disabilities, but most of the student population is either emotionally disturbed or autistic. Also, my students come from very low income homes and unfortunately live in foster homes or homeless shelters. There are many challenges that the students, their families and educators have to overcome in order to create a rich, loving, safe learning environment.

My Project

This project is designed to bring a fun gym experience to my students who unfortunately don't get the opportunity to enjoy gym the way most children enjoy gym class. My students have sensory issues and do not enjoy or benefit from play basketball or football, stuff that most kids play in gym class all over. They get more out of jumping on a trampoline or playing with sand and water activities. Therapeutic balls and beads help them unwind and makes them less tense. The students will take turns playing in a giant ball pit and creating waves in the water table and creating sand castles in the sand table. They will learn to not be afraid to touch different textures and overcome their fears of going to the beach or taking a bath and playing in a ball pit with other children.

This project won't only bring fun and excitement to my students but will help them and their families participate in activities outside the classroom.

My goal is to help desensitized my students to different textures such as sand and water. It is very difficult and strenuous to do everyday activities that so many other children do, such as taking a bath or going to the beach. With generous help of others this project can touch the lives of many children and families with needs.
