A typical day in my classroom is filled with art, books and play. I plan a smooth flow to our schedule of both high and low energy activities. During choice time, I set up the room the same way. I like to have activities that promote social interaction as well as promote independence and introspect.
I work in a public preschool, that consists of 20 classrooms.
Every student in the school was born in 2011. It is a preschool wonderland, filled with children from many different backgrounds and needs. I have a wonderful class, that absolutely loves attending school. They enter the class every day, eager to work, learn and play. They love reading stories and talking about them. I use many books to help facilitate topics of study and art projects. Laying down for rest time, can be a little challenging this time of year, the class is getting older, therefor the need to sleep, midday, is less necessary. During rest time, the children have been asking to listen to Audio books. They love them, and it helps with the transition from an noisy lunch activity, to a quite, rest activity. Unfortunately, We are a new school and do not have many Audio books yet. We are hoping to have many more books to listen to after this is done, so the class does not have to always listen to the same books.
My Project
I would like to have a fully equipped, enriching listening center for my class to utilize everyday. I want it to be fun, intriguing and stimulating, in order to promote early literacy, pre-reading, writing and language skills, independent learning,and social interactions in small groups. They will have the opportunity to listen to Audio stories on the CD player, alone, or with friends. I chose 2 big chairs, because they are big enough for two children to sit together. I would like to give the children the opportunity to sit quietly, listening to Audio books and music, then sit together or alone, and draw pictures of the stories, or create their own books, using blank paper and blank teacher facilitated books to create their own story books. They will also have the opportunity to make stories out of felt board stories and make up their own stories and designs out of felt as well. The children can use this center in so many ways, and would be a priceless teaching tool in many aspects.
These donations will provide invaluable learning resources in our classroom, that we would otherwise not have the possibility to obtain.
It will provide the class with a wealth of pre-literacy and pre-writing materials that they need to learn and work with in order to get ready and be successful for Kindergarten. This will be a unique center for our classroom. It will give the children an opportunity to make their own choices about books they want to hear, and collaborate with their friends.
