Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Let me first start by saying that I am a very lucky teacher! All of my 4th graders (all 48 of them) are exemplary students. They are kind, thoughtful, creative and hardworking. Every day they try---and succeed in---impressing me.

But some of my kids have a tough time staying on task because the seating situation is challenging for them.

They become bored very easily. Hours of sitting on the regular chairs and desktops have been a hindrance to a positive learning environment. To these children, regular chairs and desks get boring and monotonous. This is particularly challenging to those who require different needs and accommodations. Promoting movement in my classroom with alternative seating is something that I've slowly come to implement. I want to provide my eager learners the best possible classroom environment where they can take learning risks and achieve academic success.

My Project

I am a fourth grade teacher in the state of Florida, currently teaching a total of 48 children. We are a departmentalized elementary school. I teach Reading and Language Arts/Writing for two hours to two different classes every day. These two subject areas are very important for my students, not only because they are stated-tested on their learning at the end of the year, but also because these areas provide the fundamentals for successful writing and reading comprehension skills for the rest of their lives.

Frequently, however, my kids find themselves becoming restless or bored with the regular seating environment.

It becomes particularly challenging to those kids who have different needs and require accommodations.

It is difficult for those kids who have a hard time staying on task to grasp skills and concepts related to reading and writing. Throughout my years of teaching, I've found that some kids work best by standing or by having the chance to move around. Until now, my classroom has been set up like a traditional classroom with groups of four children's desks and chairs. This type of set-up is not inviting or appropriate for that child who likes to move, sit a little higher or sit at a round/high table.

This year, I have slowly transitioned my class into flexible seating which promotes movement in the classroom with alternative seating options. I've noticed that the children are more excited, focused and engaged. My students LOVE it! As a teacher, anything that improves academic performance is something that I want to promote to all of my students.
