This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a School Counselor serving students in grades K-5 and I am looking to develop in students the love of the Game of Chess using chess sets and books to support this learning process. More often than I'd like, I hear from students that they spend most of their free time engaged in video games or social media platforms that are loaded with information they are not ready for and with content that is highly mature for their age level.

With the chess games and books that I receive, I will begin my journey of introducing the game of chess, which is intended to reinforce skills that are guaranteed to be beneficial in their daily lives.

Some benefits include improvement in academic performance, memory and critical thinking, and problem-solving. Chess also supports building character. When kids make a mistake in chess, it’s a learning opportunity. They can then evaluate how they could have played better. Making mistakes is not a problem; learning from them is the goal. One of the most beneficial results of playing chess is that it brings people together.

Learning chess in a class with other students is a great way to build positive relationships. As players learn to play by the rules of the game, they develop trust and share in positive relationships with each other.

The students I encounter daily have a high level of curiosity and eagerness to learn new things. A lot of students struggle to keep up with grade-level work and stay focused during instruction. I firmly believe that the game of chess, as many studies prove, will improve academic performance and foster the desire to become healthy competitors and develop effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are vital in life.
