My Students

I teach students in the 8th to 12th grade with a range of cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities in the junior high and high school self-contained classroom. With the help of the high school counselor and my paraprofessionals, we strive to teach our students functional and life skills that will transition over to their own personal life and work after high school.

It takes a collaborative approach to meet all of the needs of each student in my class.

Several of my students want to play football on the professional level when they grow up, so we work closely with the football staff to find jobs that are meaningful and helpful to all.

All of my students participate in various activities and subjects, but learn best by hands-on experiences. They love creating new ideas, products, and trying out experiments we normally find on the internet. They also love interacting with their peers and being included in school wide activities or events.

My Project

Every year we run out of Kleenex's in the classroom by the end of the year, but teaching during a pandemic we were running out mid year. The students in our district come from low income homes and when purchasing school supplies they often leave out a box of Kleenex. This often leads to teachers paying for them out of their own pocket or budget.

The students I teach not only have learning disabilities but most are also considered medically fragile or immune compromised.

Therefore, we go through a lot of Kleenex blowing noses, covering up coughs, and helping combat the spread of COVID-19. However, we would rather have a problem of running out instead of our students being sick and unable to come to school to learn.
