My Students

-When you listen, it's amazing what you can learn. When you act on what you've learned, it's amazing what you can change. -Audrey McLaughlin Listening is a major component of learning, but that is difficult to do when the classroom is not equipped with the materials to do so.

This year, I am expecting an eager group of between 20-23 first graders who are coming in ready to learn.

I work in a "Title 1" school located in Cordova, TN. We are a very diverse school/community. We serve students from across the world including: India, Mexico Africa, Korea and Costa Rica just to name a few places. Our school is a family of individuals who work hard to ensure that we provide the best education to every student who walks through our doors. We are also a family who consider our students and their families as our family. We provide assistance and resources to our families to help with the education process. We know that every student is capable of learning and we are determined to ensure that.

My Project

My students are in desperate need of a listening center. Last year, my class was provided with the components of a listening center (radio, headphones, jacks), but the equipment never properly worked. This year, I am determined to provide my students with a working listening center. Listening is an important skill needed for comprehension. When a student is an effective listener, they are able to understand more and build upon knowledge. The listening center will also help my ESL students, especially when learning how to speak a new language. Listening centers also provide an excellent example of how fluent reading sounds with expression and with little interruption. Last, but not least, listening centers provides a sense of independence for students who are learning how to read.

The project that I am submitting will make a difference because it will provide opportunities for all learners to strengthen their listening skills.

This project will also help my students become fluent independent readers.
