Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fourth graders love to read! They look forward to independent reading time each day. My students also come from a variety of diverse backgrounds that I aim to celebrate through class discussions and the materials I display throughout the classroom. Through the help of generous donors from other Donors Choose projects, I have accumulated many great graphic novels. The graphic novel genre seems to be a favorite among my students.

These books have been well-loved and well-received by my students this year.

Still, upon reflecting on our class' collection of grade-appropriate independent reading books, I have come to realize that the cultural groups that are the most heavily represented among the student population at my school are two of the least represented cultures in the books available to them. The books included in this project would really help to fill that gap.

Reading is really challenging for many of my students, so having high-interest graphic novels featuring relatable characters makes reading more accessible to them and encourages them to continue practicing their reading skills. These kinds of books are also great for the many English language learners in my class as they continue to acquire the language since the pictures can help with their understanding of the text.

I know these books would be loved by my students. With the many academic challenges my students face, it can be easy to lose interest in reading, but having a high-interest book that is relatable can make all the difference in inspiring a love of reading and learning.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our class project!

Sincerely,

Ms.R
